F1 Sprint Weekend Format Explained: What Changes and What to Expect

James Colton 6 min read Verified for the 2026 season

Seven of the 24 grands prix in 2026 are sprint weekends. The schedule changes significantly: instead of three practice sessions and one qualifying, a sprint weekend has one practice session, sprint qualifying, a sprint race, grand prix qualifying, and the grand prix. If you are attending a sprint weekend, the Saturday programme is much busier than a standard race weekend and the session order matters for understanding which car is on which tyre.

Key facts

Sprint weekends in 2026: 7 of 24 races. Circuits: confirmed in FIA 2026 calendar.

Session order: Friday practice (1 session), Friday sprint qualifying (SQ1, SQ2, SQ3), Saturday sprint race (~100km / 30 minutes), Saturday grand prix qualifying (Q1, Q2, Q3), Sunday grand prix.

The sprint race has no mandatory pit stop. Teams choose whether to pit or not. Most choose to run the full distance on one set of tyres.

Sprint qualifying and grand prix qualifying are separate sessions with independent grids. A driver's sprint result does not affect their grand prix starting position.

Fastest lap in the sprint race earns 1 bonus championship point (same as the grand prix).

The sprint qualifying sessions: SQ1, SQ2, SQ3

Sprint qualifying uses the same knockout format as grand prix qualifying but with shorter session lengths. SQ1 is 12 minutes, SQ2 is 10 minutes, SQ3 is 8 minutes. The same elimination rules apply: five drivers eliminated in SQ1, five in SQ2, leaving ten for SQ3.

The key difference from standard qualifying: the Q2 tyre rule does not apply in sprint qualifying. Drivers can use any compound they choose in SQ2 regardless of what they plan to run in the sprint race. Sprint qualifying tyre choices do not carry any strategic obligation into Saturday.

Sprint qualifying is on Friday evening. At circuits in different time zones, this means sprint qualifying may be in very different ambient temperatures from the sprint race on Saturday. Teams prepare tyre set-up data for both conditions separately.

The sprint race: what it is and how to watch it

The sprint race is approximately 100 kilometres, which works out to 19 to 24 laps depending on circuit length. At most sprint circuits this is about 25 to 30 minutes of racing. There are no mandatory pit stops and most teams run the full distance on one set of tyres.

Points are awarded for the top 8 finishers: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. This is a smaller points allocation than the grand prix (where P1 earns 25 points) but the same system as the main race in terms of relative value between finishing positions.

From the grandstand, a sprint race is compressed and intense: 24 laps instead of 57, with the same field, the same circuits, but frequently more aggressive driving because there is no second-race consequence. Drivers are more willing to take risks because a DNF (did not finish) in the sprint has no effect on the grand prix starting grid.

Safety car and red flag procedures apply in sprint races identically to the grand prix. The sprint can be red-flagged and restarted under the same rules as a main race.

The qualifying format for the sprint race (SQ1, SQ2, SQ3) uses the same timing screen display as grand prix qualifying. Reading the sector splits and gap columns works identically in both sessions.

F1 Qualifying Format Explained

Grand prix qualifying on a sprint weekend

On a sprint weekend, grand prix qualifying happens on Saturday afternoon, after the sprint race. This is the session that determines the Sunday race grid. The same Q1/Q2/Q3 format applies, including the Q2 tyre rule for Sunday.

Drivers are generally in different physical and psychological states for grand prix qualifying on a sprint weekend. They have already raced in the sprint and used tyre sets during sprint qualifying. Tyre allocation management across the weekend is more compressed.

From the timing screens, grand prix qualifying on a sprint weekend behaves identically to standard qualifying. Q3 final laps are still the highest-intensity timing screen moments of the weekend.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sprint race in F1?
A sprint race is a shorter standalone race of approximately 100 kilometres (19 to 24 laps) held on Saturday at sprint weekends. It has its own qualifying session (sprint qualifying) and its own points allocation (8 points for the winner down to 1 point for P8). The sprint result does not affect the grand prix starting grid.
How is a sprint weekend different from a normal F1 weekend?
A standard F1 weekend has three practice sessions, one qualifying session, and the race. A sprint weekend has one practice session, sprint qualifying, the sprint race, grand prix qualifying, and the race. Friday is much busier. Saturday has racing in the morning and qualifying in the afternoon.
Do F1 drivers have to pit in the sprint race?
No. There is no mandatory pit stop in the sprint race. Drivers may pit to change tyres if needed (e.g. for a puncture or damage) but most teams run the full sprint distance on one set of tyres. The sprint race is too short for a strategic pit stop to be beneficial in most cases.
Does sprint qualifying affect the grand prix starting grid?
No. Sprint qualifying determines the starting grid for the sprint race only. Grand prix qualifying, held separately on Saturday afternoon, determines the Sunday race starting grid. The two sessions are completely independent.
Which F1 races are sprint weekends in 2026?
Seven of the 24 races in 2026 are sprint weekends. The specific circuits are confirmed in the FIA 2026 calendar. Historically, sprint weekends have included Brazil, Austria, Belgium, Qatar, and others. Check the official F1 calendar for 2026 circuit confirmation.
How many points does the F1 sprint race winner get?
8 points. The sprint points scale awards 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 to the top 8 finishers. The grand prix points scale awards 25 points for the win, so a sprint victory is worth less than a third of a grand prix win. An additional 1 bonus point is available for the fastest lap in the sprint race.

Sprint weekend format and session order per FIA 2026 Sporting Regulations. Sprint points scale and sprint qualifying session lengths per FIA 2026 Sporting Regulations. Number of sprint weekends (7) confirmed from FIA 2026 calendar.
