The Canadian GP has one of the more permissive bag policies on the F1 calendar. No clear-bag requirement. Backpacks allowed. Outside food permitted. Soft coolers get in. The catch is Montreal's weather: the bag you bring needs to also carry rain gear and layers, which changes the packing calculus.
Max bag size: 45.7 cm ร 25.4 cm ร 22.8 cm (18 ร 10 ร 9 in)
Clear bag required: No โ regular backpacks are allowed within size limits
Outside food: Allowed
Soft-sided coolers: Allowed within size limits
Glass / metal containers: Not allowed
Umbrellas: Not allowed โ use a packable poncho
All bags: Searched at entry gates
The maximum permitted bag size is 45.7 cm long ร 25.4 cm wide ร 22.8 cm tall (18 ร 10 ร 9 inches). This applies to backpacks, daypacks, and soft-sided coolers equally.

A standard 20โ25L daypack fits within these dimensions. Large hiking packs, travel backpacks, and oversized duffel bags generally won't. If you're unsure about your bag, measure it before race day โ not at the security queue.
One bag per person. If you bring a cooler, that counts as your bag. You can't bring a separate daypack and a cooler โ pick one.
Late May in Montreal is variable โ a single race weekend can run the full range from a cold, blustery Friday to a warm, sunny Sunday. You need layers. You need rain protection. Both need to fit in a bag no larger than 45.7 cm ร 25.4 cm ร 22.8 cm, which is actually manageable if you pack deliberately.
The biggest packing mistake at Montreal is bringing a standard fold-up umbrella โ they're confiscated at the gate. A packable rain poncho weighs almost nothing, compresses to the size of a fist, and fits in any bag. A compact rain jacket is the better option for anyone staying all day, since ponchos turn into sails on the wind off the St. Lawrence River.
These won't get through regardless of what bag they're in:
Yes โ and this is one of the things that makes Montreal stand out among F1 venues. Outside food and non-alcoholic drinks are permitted, which is not the policy at Miami, Monaco, Silverstone, or most other races. A packed lunch is a legitimate option.
Soft-sided coolers within the size limits (45.7 ร 25.4 ร 22.8 cm) are also allowed. If you want cold drinks and sandwiches without paying event pricing, you can bring them. No glass containers. No metal thermoses. Soft plastic and reusable food containers are fine.
Outside alcohol is still prohibited โ bringing beer into the circuit is not permitted regardless of container type. The circuit has beer and food vendors throughout; the pricing is what you'd expect for a major sporting event.
Compact cameras, mirrorless cameras, and consumer DSLRs are allowed. The rule that gets equipment turned away is the lens restriction: lenses approximately 300mm or longer are classed as professional photography equipment and won't be permitted entry.
In practice, enforcement is based on how professional the gear looks, not the technical specification. A consumer telephoto zoom (such as a 70โ300mm consumer lens) is generally fine. A 600mm prime or a pro-body camera with a 300mm f/2.8 will attract attention.
GoPros, action cameras, and phone cameras are all permitted.
All bags are searched on entry. The thoroughness varies by day: Friday practice gates tend to move faster with less detailed checking. Sunday race day is where security is tightest, with longer queues and closer inspection.
The standard process is a bag inspection and a pat-down or wand scan. Security staff at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve operate in French and English โ all gate signage is bilingual. If you're directed to a secondary check line, it's routine and not cause for concern.
Download your tickets offline before you arrive. Mobile signal on รle Notre-Dame is poor all weekend โ tens of thousands of people on a small island with limited cell tower access. Don't count on loading your ticket from the gate.
Arrive early on Sunday. The metro from Jean-Drapeau dumps large volumes of people at the same entry points over a short window before the race. The security queue and the metro crowd peak at the same time โ arriving 90 minutes early skips the worst of it.
