Melbourne March is mild — but it's not a pack-light situation. The UV is extreme (pack sunscreen even if rain is forecast), the weather shifts within hours (pack a layer), and you're on foot for 7+ hours (pack comfortable shoes). Everything below fits in a compact daypack within the Albert Park bag rules.
Myki card (topped up)
Required for Melbourne trams. Top up at 7-Eleven, train stations, or online before race day. Credit card tap-on works on most services but Myki is more reliable.
Tickets (downloaded offline)
Phone signal around the circuit is poor on race day. Download tickets to your phone's wallet or save screenshots before you leave the hotel.
Ear defenders or earplugs
F1 cars are louder than any race broadcast conveys. This is not optional for comfort. Reusable earplugs are fine; ear defenders are better for sustained sessions.
Photo ID
Required for entry. Passport or driver's licence.
Phone charger / power bank
A full day at a race circuit drains a phone quickly — F1 app, photos, maps, and calls home all adding up. A 10,000mAh battery covers a full day easily.
Myki card
Covered above — the most important transport item. Cannot board a Melbourne tram without it (or credit card tap).
Paper map or offline route saved
Mobile signal is unreliable in the Albert Park area on race day. Save your walking or tram route to Google Maps offline before you leave the hotel.
Cash (small amount)
Most vendors inside Albert Park are cashless. But some food stalls near the outer areas of the circuit accept cash. A small amount for contingency is useful.
The most common packing mistake at Melbourne: treating it as a warm-weather race and leaving out UV protection. March in Melbourne feels mild; the UV does not follow the temperature.
SPF 50+ sunscreen (50ml+)
Apply before leaving the hotel. Bring a small bottle to reapply at midday. UV is extreme even with cloud cover — this is the most important item on this list for Melbourne specifically.
Wide-brim hat or cap
Essential for a full day in variable sun. A cap is fine; a wide brim is better for neck and face coverage.
Sunglasses
Standard. Bring regardless of the forecast.
Compact rain layer (packable jacket or poncho)
Melbourne weather can change within hours. A small packable jacket or folded poncho takes up minimal space and saves a very uncomfortable afternoon if rain arrives.
Light mid-layer (long-sleeve or thin fleece)
Temperature drops to 12–15°C by evening. Race starts at 15:00 and runs 2 hours — if you stay for the podium, you'll be glad of an extra layer.
Reusable water bottle
Free cold water refill stations are available inside Albert Park. Bring an empty plastic or soft bottle to use them. Glass bottles are not permitted.
Snacks
Small snacks (energy bars, sandwiches) are generally permitted into Albert Park. Food prices inside the circuit are high. A couple of bars in your bag saves money and a long queue.
Comfortable trainers
You will walk 10,000–15,000 steps on hard tarmac. New shoes worn for the first time on race day is a consistent mistake. Wear footwear you've walked in before.
Hand sanitiser
Portable toilets at a race circuit. Small bottle, worth having.
Wet wipes
Sunscreen application, food, general hygiene over a long day.
