Where to Stay for the British Grand Prix 2026Silverstone is in the middle of a field in Northamptonshire. Where you stay is a transit decision.

The circuit is 18 miles from Milton Keynes, 12 from Northampton, and 90 minutes from central London. None of those distances are walkable — you're relying on shuttles or driving, and the roads around Silverstone lock up badly on race day. See the Getting There guide for the full shuttle and exit strategy.

The rule of thumb

Stay in Milton Keynes if you want the best balance of price, availability, and logistics — official shuttle hub, 25-minute journey, decent evening options.

Stay in Northampton if Milton Keynes books out or you want to be slightly closer — 20-minute shuttle, smaller city, fills faster than MK.

Camp on-circuit if you want the full British GP experience — walk to the grandstands, no shuttle queues, proper festival atmosphere. Book as soon as camping tickets go on sale.

Stay in London only if you're already based there and doing a single day trip. The Chiltern Railway to Bicester North plus shuttle adds up to 2+ hours each way — fine for one day, grinding for three.

Avoid Towcester — it looks 8 miles away on a map but has almost no hotels and the A43 turns into a car park on race day.

1

Milton KeynesBest overall

Milton Keynes is the default base for the British GP and for good reason. It has the largest hotel inventory of any town near Silverstone, the official race shuttle departs from Milton Keynes Central station, and the journey takes around 25 minutes on a good run. In the evenings you have actual restaurants and bars rather than a quiet market town. The city itself isn't glamorous but it's practical — which is exactly what you need for a three-day race weekend.

Shuttle to circuit: Milton Keynes Central → Silverstone (~25 min, pre-book through Silverstone)

Race-week price range: £120–220/night (mid-range)

Vibe: Functional city with enough evening options — not scenic but very practical for a race weekend

Book near the centre rather than the outskirts — you want to be walking distance from the shuttle pickup, not driving to it. The station area has the best concentration of hotels.

2

NorthamptonClosest city

Northampton is 12 miles from the circuit — closer than Milton Keynes — and has park-and-ride and shuttle options of its own. The hotel range is smaller, which means it fills faster and race-week prices can be similar to MK despite the lower baseline. If you can get in early, it's a reasonable alternative. The town centre is quieter than Milton Keynes in the evenings but has enough for a race weekend.

Shuttle/park-and-ride to circuit: ~20 min — check Silverstone's official transport page for Northampton pickup details

Race-week price range: £100–180/night

Vibe: Quieter than MK — fine for sleeping, limited late-night options

Northampton books out faster than you'd expect. Fewer hotels means less inventory, and a lot of British GP regulars prefer it for the shorter shuttle. If it's available when you're searching, it's worth taking.

On-circuit campingThe Silverstone way

Silverstone sells camping tickets separately through its own website, and on-site camping is genuinely popular — it's a different experience from a hotel base. You walk to the grandstands, there's no shuttle queue on race morning, and the festival atmosphere in the campsite continues after the track goes quiet. Different zones have different characters: some are close to the circuit entrance, some are closer to the action on Sunday. Silverstone publishes a campsite map each year.

Circuit access: Walk-in from campsite — no shuttle needed

Price range: £80–150 for the weekend (camping ticket, not per night)

Vibe: Proper festival — expect noise, British weather, and a good crowd

Camping tickets are the first thing to sell out. They go on sale months before race weekend — sometimes before hotel rooms are even bookable — and popular zones disappear quickly. Book direct through the Silverstone website. Bring a tent that handles rain. July in Northamptonshire is not guaranteed sunshine.

LondonIf you're already based there

London works as a base if you're already there for other reasons or only attending one day. Chiltern Railways runs from London Marylebone to Bicester North, from where a shuttle or taxi covers the final stretch to Silverstone. Door-to-gate time is realistically 2 hours or more. For a single day that's manageable. For three consecutive days — Friday practice, Saturday sprint or qualifying, Sunday race — it becomes a significant daily commute. London hotels are also expensive at baseline with no race-week markup, so the cost advantage that might otherwise justify the journey isn't there.

Route: Marylebone → Bicester North (Chiltern Railways) → shuttle/taxi → circuit (~2h total)

Race-week price range: £200–500+/night (London baseline, unaffected by race)

Vibe: Everything London has — but you're commuting 4+ hours a day

Check the Chiltern Railways race-day timetable early. Services from Marylebone are busy on British GP weekend and some early morning slots fill. Return trains after the race are the same story — busy, with queues at Bicester North.

Where not to stay

Towcester (8 miles): Looks very close on the map. It has almost no hotels and the A43 between Towcester and the circuit is one of the worst pinch points on race day — expect to sit in it for 45–90 minutes. Not worth it.

Buckingham (~14 miles): Small market town with a handful of B&Bs. Fine if everything else is genuinely sold out but the road access to Silverstone from this direction is poor on race day.

Coventry (~30 miles north): Too far, no direct shuttle, and the route passes through road-closure zones on race day. Not a practical base.

When to book and what to expect on price

Now through February (5+ months out)

Best selection and rates. Camping tickets available through Silverstone direct — book these first. Flexible cancellation is widely available at this stage — take it. Race is July 3–5, 2026.

March–May (2–4 months out)

Milton Keynes and Northampton hotel inventory thins from March. Popular mid-range properties in MK fill first. Camping zones you actually want (closest to circuit entrance) may already be gone.

Final 4 weeks (June)

Expect 2–3× normal rates on whatever remains in Milton Keynes and Northampton. London options will still be available but won't be cheaper. If you're searching in June, take what you can get.

Race-week price reality

Milton Keynes hotels run 2–3× normal rates during race weekend. A mid-range property that costs £70/night normally will list at £150–220 for July 3–5. Northampton follows a similar pattern. London hotel prices are not affected by the British GP — the race is too far away — but London's baseline is already high.

Flexible cancellation is worth the small premium. British weather means plans change — if the forecast for Sunday looks grim you may want to reconsider a camping stay, and a refundable hotel gives you options.
