F1 Off-Season Planning Guide — Start Your 2027 Trip Now

James Colton 6 min read Verified for the 2026 season

The fans who get the best deals don't start planning in March. They start in November. Here's when to do what, so you're locked in before race-week prices kick in.

November–December: Pick Your Race

The 2027 calendar usually leaks in October and gets confirmed by December. As soon as you know the dates, decide which race you want. Don't wait for tickets to go on sale — by then, the cheapest flights and hotels are already gone.

Use our race planner to compare costs and vibes. If you went to a race in 2026, consider a different continent for 2027. If it's your first time, pick something from the first-timer list.

This is also when to book flights if you're crossing continents. London to Melbourne in March is $800 if you book in November. It's $1,600 in January.

January–February: Book Hotels

Race-week hotel rates jump the moment tickets go on sale. If you can book a refundable hotel before that happens, you lock in normal rates and can cancel if plans change.

Look at hotels 20–40 minutes from the circuit, not right next to it. You'll pay half the price and the commute is the same as everyone else's.

For popular races (Monaco, Monza, Singapore), Airbnb hosts raise prices too — but they raise them later than hotels. Early Airbnb bookings can save 30–50% vs waiting.

February–April: Buy Tickets

Most circuits release tickets in waves. Early bird pricing is 10–20% cheaper than full price. Follow the circuit's social media for sale announcements — the best grandstand seats sell out in hours.

GA tickets rarely sell out (except Monaco, which has no GA). If you're flexible on seating, you can wait. If you want a specific grandstand, buy early.

Use the circuit's official site, not resellers. Reseller markups are 30–100% and you have no guarantee of refund if the race is cancelled.

April–August: Plan the Details

Book your race-day transport. Shuttles fill up, parking passes sell out, and ride-share prices are unpredictable. Whatever your plan is for getting to and from the circuit, confirm it now.

Read the packing guide for your specific race. Order the clear bag if you need one. Check the weather averages for that month at that circuit.

If you're combining the race with a holiday (Barcelona, Montreal, Singapore are great for this), book activities and restaurants now. Race-week availability disappears.

September–November: Final Prep

Recheck everything a month before: hotel confirmation, flight times, transport booking, bag policy. Circuits occasionally change rules between seasons.

Download the circuit's official app (most have one). It'll have maps, schedules, and gate information. Screenshot everything in case you have no signal at the circuit.

Check the weather forecast the week before. Adjust your packing. Set expectations for the race-day timeline — gates open early, the race is in the afternoon, and the exit takes hours.

The Golden Rule

Every month you wait past the calendar announcement costs you money. Hotels are the biggest swing — a $150/night room in January becomes $400/night in May for the same race weekend. Flights follow the same curve.

The best F1 trip isn't the most expensive one. It's the one where you planned early enough that the logistics fade into the background and you can just enjoy the race.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start planning a 2027 F1 trip?
As soon as the 2027 calendar is confirmed — typically October or November 2026. Hotels and flights start repricing the moment the calendar drops. A room that costs $150/night in November becomes $400/night in May for the same race weekend.
When do F1 tickets go on sale?
Most circuits open ticket sales 6–9 months before race day. Early bird waves are typically 10–20% cheaper than standard pricing. Popular races (Monaco, Silverstone, Spa) see the best grandstand seats sell out within hours of the first sale.
Should I buy F1 tickets from resellers?
Avoid resellers where possible. Markup is typically 30–100% above face value, and you have no guarantee of a refund if the race is cancelled or postponed. Use the circuit's official ticketing site, or authorised partners listed on the circuit's website.
How much more expensive are hotels during F1 race week?
Hotels within an hour of most circuits charge 2–4x normal rates during race week. This is the single biggest hidden cost on any F1 trip. Booking refundable hotels before the ticket sale announcement is one way to secure normal rates.
Is it worth staying close to the circuit during race week?
Usually not. Hotels 20–40 minutes away typically cost half as much and the travel time is similar — there's no real advantage to being next door when 50,000 people are leaving the circuit at the same time.
How much cheaper are early bird F1 tickets?
Early bird pricing is typically 10–20% cheaper than standard pricing on most circuits. The saving is real but the bigger advantage is access — early buyers get the best grandstand seats before they sell out.
