COTA Bag Policy 202612" × 12" × 20". No metal bottles. No on-site storage.

COTA's bag policy catches people on two things: metal water bottles and bag dimensions. Neither has storage options if you get it wrong at the gate.

The size limit

Maximum bag size: 12" × 12" × 20" (approximately 30 × 30 × 51 cm)

Clear bag required: No — but clear bags are recommended for faster entry

Enforcement: Security is most strict on liquids/alcohol and bag dimensions

Metal bottles: Prohibited — plastic or reusable plastic only

Outside alcohol: Prohibited

Measure at home, not at the gate

Security at COTA does not store bags that fail. If your bag fails the check, you return to your vehicle or shuttle — there are no on-site lockers. Measure before you pack.

The metal bottle rule

YETI cups, insulated metal water bottles, and any metal container for liquids are prohibited. Security enforces this consistently. The outcome if you bring one: security will ask you to throw it away or return it to your vehicle. There is no storage.

COTA has free water stations throughout the circuit. Bring a large plastic bottle and refill throughout the day. This is the right setup for a hot Texas day — and it gets through the gate without issue.

Your YETI stays at the hotel

This catches a lot of first-timers who pack their usual insulated bottle. A large plastic bottle fills the same role at COTA — bring that instead.

What's allowed

  • Bags within 12" × 12" × 20" dimensions
  • Clear bags (move through security faster)
  • Plastic water bottles (any size within reason)
  • Phones, tablets, and personal cameras (no lenses over 10")
  • Binoculars
  • Ear protection
  • Medications and medical equipment
  • Compact rain jackets and ponchos
  • Food purchased inside the circuit

What's not allowed

  • Metal water bottles (including YETI and all insulated metal containers)
  • Glass containers
  • Bags over 12" × 12" × 20"
  • Coolers
  • Outside alcohol
  • Professional cameras with lenses over 10 inches
  • Drones or remote-controlled aircraft
  • Smoke bombs, flares, or pyrotechnics
  • Laser pointers

What gets rejected most often

  • Metal and insulated water bottles (YETI and similar)
  • Oversized bags exceeding 12"×12"×20" dimensions
  • Glass bottles and containers
  • Outside alcohol
  • Professional camera lenses over 10 inches

If your bag is rejected

There are no storage lockers on-site at COTA. If your bag fails the check:

  • Return to your vehicle and leave the item there
  • Return to the shuttle if you came by shuttle — this means rejoining the entry queue
  • Discard prohibited items (for small items like a single bottle)

The right plan is to check your bag at home. Measure the dimensions and swap any metal containers for plastic before you leave your hotel.
