October in Texas. Hot during the day, genuinely cold after sunset. Pack for both in the same bag — and make sure that bag isn't metal.
Typical daytime temperature: 18–29°C, with Texas heat pushing to 33°C on warmer days. The UV index in late October Texas is higher than most Europeans expect from an autumn race — the sun is still strong. Start sun protection from arrival, not when you already feel hot.
After sunset, the temperature drops rapidly to around 13°C. This is not a gradual cool-down — October evenings in Texas can feel cold after a warm afternoon. If you're staying for concerts, a light jacket is not optional.
Daytime: 18–29°C (up to 33°C possible) — Texas UV still high in October
Evening: Drops rapidly to ~13°C after sunset
Rain: Dry season overall — passing thunderstorms possible in afternoon
COTA's size limit is 12" × 12" × 20" (roughly 30 × 30 × 51 cm). No strict clear bag requirement, though clear bags move through security faster. The bigger issue is the metal bottle prohibition — YETI-style and other insulated metal bottles will be confiscated or sent back to your car. Bring plastic only.

Light breathable shirt
EssentialSynthetic moisture-wicking or linen. Heavy cotton gets warm quickly in Texas sun. Light colour reflects heat.
Comfortable shorts or light trousers
EssentialExpect 15,000+ steps on uneven grass, gravel, and concrete. Anything restrictive or heavy will be uncomfortable by midday.
Broken-in shoes
EssentialNew shoes will create blisters on the uneven terrain. COTA's GA areas cover significant ground — broken-in, comfortable footwear is non-negotiable.
The temperature swing from afternoon to evening at COTA is significant. 28°C during afternoon sessions can drop to 13°C by the time post-race concerts end. People who pack only for the warm daytime temperatures are the ones shivering through the headline act.
Light jacket or hoodie
Essential (concerts)Needs to fit in a 12"×12"×20" compliant bag during the day. A packable synthetic jacket or a medium-weight hoodie is the right call.
Compact packable rain jacket
RecommendedPassing thunderstorms possible in the afternoon. Packs small. Also serves as a windbreaker for cold evenings.
Foam earplugs reduce noise without blocking it completely — you can still hear announcements and conversation. Ear defenders with 25dB NRR let you talk normally while protecting your hearing. Modern F1 hybrid engines are quieter than the old V8s, but a full race day at circuit volume is still more than enough for long-term hearing protection to matter.
Mobile signal at COTA is generally adequate — the network handles large events better than many European circuits. A power bank is still worth bringing for a full race day running from morning to late evening concert.
Download tickets, circuit maps, and the COTA app before arriving. The COTA app has live circuit maps and driver appearance schedules — screenshot your ticket as a backup.
