What to Wear to the US Grand PrixLayers for both temperatures — and shoes that have been worn before.

Warm days, cold evenings, uneven terrain, and 15,000 steps. Layers and broken-in shoes. That's the COTA outfit.

The weather context

October in Austin is deceptive. Daytime temperatures reach 18–29°C with Texas UV that remains strong even in late autumn. After sunset, the temperature drops rapidly to around 13°C. If you're staying for concerts — which typically run until late in the evening — you will need a proper layer, not just a light shirt.

Daytime: 18–29°C — sunny, strong UV, light breathable layers

Evening: Drops to ~13°C after sunset — proper jacket required

Terrain: Uneven grass, gravel, concrete — 15,000+ steps on GA days

What to wear

Light breathable shirt

Essential

Synthetic moisture-wicking or linen. Light colour reflects heat. Texas afternoon sun is strong — heavy or dark fabrics make the afternoon sessions uncomfortable.

Comfortable shorts or light trousers

Essential

GA areas cover significant ground on uneven terrain. Anything restrictive or heavy becomes uncomfortable quickly. Light synthetic or linen is the right call.

Broken-in shoes

Essential

New shoes create blisters on COTA's grass hillsides and gravel paths. 15,000+ steps on uneven terrain with new footwear is a bad decision. Broken-in trainers or walking shoes only.

Wide-brimmed hat or cap

Essential

Keeps sun off face and neck during afternoon sessions. GA areas have limited shade — a hat is functional protection, not optional comfort.

Sunglasses

Essential

Strong sun until early evening. Standard practice for a daytime outdoor event in Texas.

Light jacket or hoodie

Essential (evenings)

For the post-sunset temperature drop. Needs to fit in a 12"×12"×20" compliant bag during the day. A packable synthetic jacket or medium hoodie works best.

Compact packable rain jacket

Recommended

Afternoon thunderstorms are possible in late October. Folds small enough to carry all day. Also works as a windbreaker for cold evenings.

What to avoid

  • Heavy cotton — gets warm in Texas afternoon sun, doesn't breathe well
  • New shoes — COTA's terrain will cause blisters on broken-in footwear, guaranteed on new
  • Metal or YETI water bottles — prohibited at the gate, no on-site storage
  • Overly formal or dressy clothing — uneven terrain, potential rain, and a full day outdoors make this impractical
  • Heavy coats — too warm during the day, and they don't fit easily in a compliant bag

Day vs evening outfit

Daytime sessions (FP, Qualifying, Race)

Light breathable shirt + shorts/light trousers + hat + sunglasses + sunscreen. Jacket in bag.

Evening concerts and post-race

Same base layers + jacket or hoodie on. Temperature drops after sunset — the layer you carried all day gets used.
