Getting to the Austrian Grand Prix 2026Straightforward in. The exit is where most people lose time.

Getting to Red Bull Ring is straightforward if you plan ahead. The free shuttle from Knittelfeld station is the most reliable option. Leaving after the race is where most people lose time — the post-race exit needs a plan.

1

Train to Knittelfeld + free shuttleMost popular

This is the standard approach for independent travellers. Take a train to Knittelfeld station (from Vienna: ~2.5 hours, changing at Bruck an der Mur), then the free official shuttle to the circuit.

Shuttle service: Free — runs every 20-30 minutes from Knittelfeld

Journey time: ~20 minutes from Knittelfeld to circuit

Train from Vienna: ~2.5 hours (change at Bruck an der Mur)

Post-race: use Judenburg, not Knittelfeld

The Knittelfeld shuttle back from the circuit is heavily used immediately after the race. The Judenburg shuttle runs to a separate station and is significantly less crowded. If you're heading back by train, Judenburg is the better exit option — allow extra time to reach it.

Knittelfeld station lockers fill almost immediately on race day — do not rely on them for luggage storage.

2

Arriving by air

Three airports serve the Red Bull Ring. Vienna is the most common arrival point for international visitors.

Vienna (VIE)

~200km · ~~2 hoursMost common international entry point. Best connected for long-haul flights.

Graz (GRZ)

~80km · ~~1 hourClosest airport. Limited international routes but good for European connections.

Klagenfurt (KLU)

~120km · ~~1.5 hoursSmall regional airport. Check routes — limited flights but convenient if you can get one.

From Vienna airport, the most straightforward route is the train via Vienna Hauptbahnhof to Knittelfeld, then the free circuit shuttle. Hiring a car from Vienna gives flexibility but adds ~2 hours of driving each way plus the post-race traffic issue.

3

Driving

Driving is common for fans staying locally or in Graz. On-site parking is free but the situation on race day requires planning.

Parking options

On-site (free)

Various circuit approachesFree but fills by 08:00 on race day Sunday. Arrive before 07:30 to get a space. Good option if you can manage the early start.

P4 (pre-booked, paid ~€140/day)

Pre-book through official circuit siteGuaranteed access regardless of arrival time. Worth it if you cannot arrive early. Book well in advance — limited capacity.

Arrive before 07:30 on race day

Free on-site parking fills by 08:00 on race day Sunday. If you arrive after this, you will be directed to more remote parking further from the circuit. The roads into the circuit also start to queue from around 07:00 — the earlier you arrive, the better.

On Saturday morning, traffic is lighter. Friday is the least congested day of the weekend.

Post-race exit — the part that matters most

Leaving immediately after the chequered flag at Red Bull Ring means 2-3 hours in stationary traffic. This is consistent year to year — it's not unusual bad luck.

Leave immediately after the flag

2-3 hours in traffic. Roads into and out of the circuit cannot absorb the full crowd simultaneously. This is the standard outcome, not a bad day.

Use Judenburg shuttle (train passengers)

The Judenburg shuttle is significantly less crowded than Knittelfeld immediately after the race. Adds some distance but removes most of the queue. The best exit strategy for those travelling by train.

Stay for post-race concerts, then leave

Red Bull Ring often hosts post-race concerts. This provides a natural reason to stay 45-60 minutes after the flag. Traffic clears noticeably over this window.

Wait 45+ minutes after the flag

Consistently faster than leaving immediately. Sit at a food stall or watch the podium replay. By 45 minutes post-race, the worst of the queue has cleared.

Quick summary

Flying into Vienna

Hire a car or take a train to Knittelfeld (~2.5hrs, change at Bruck an der Mur), then free shuttle to the circuit. Train + shuttle avoids Vienna traffic entirely.

Flying into Graz

Hire a car for the 1-hour drive, or take a train from Graz Hauptbahnhof toward Knittelfeld. Car is simpler given the timing.

Driving — want to park near circuit

Free on-site parking but arrive before 07:30 on race day. Or pre-book P4 (~€140/day) for guaranteed access without the early start.

Post-race — avoiding the worst of the traffic

Use Judenburg shuttle instead of Knittelfeld — much less crowded. Stay for post-race concerts or wait 45+ minutes after the flag. Leaving immediately means 2-3 hours in stationary traffic.
