What to Wear to the Austrian Grand PrixLayers first. Rain jacket in the bag. Sunscreen on regardless.

The weather at Red Bull Ring in late June is genuinely unpredictable. The Styrian mountains create their own weather system. Layers you can add or remove and a packable rain jacket are non-negotiable — not optional.

The layering system for Styrian weather

Base layer

All day

A breathable, moisture-wicking t-shirt or light long-sleeve. A synthetic or merino base layer handles both warm afternoons and cool post-storm temperatures better than cotton.

Mid layer

Morning, evening, after rain

A light fleece, hoodie, or insulating layer. Essential for the mornings, any post-storm drop in temperature, and the evening sessions. Tie it around your waist when the sun is out.

Waterproof outer

When weather turns — unpredictably

A compact packable jacket that fits inside your A3-compliant bag. This is the most important item you bring. Pull it on in 60 seconds when the sky turns — mountain storms arrive that fast.

Footwear

The GA banking is a grass hill. The circuit paths between grandstands and GA zones are outdoor terrain. In wet weather, the grass becomes slippery and paths can become muddy. Footwear matters more than at a flat stadium circuit.

Water-resistant walking shoes

Best

Handles both sunny 28°C days and wet conditions. Sufficient grip for the banking. Fits easily on the circuit without being bulky.

Lightweight trainers (non-waterproof)

Fine if dry

Comfortable in good weather. Problematic in rain on the GA banking and muddy paths. Acceptable if the forecast looks dry — but you cannot trust the Austrian GP forecast.

Fashion shoes or sandals

Avoid

The combination of outdoor terrain, grass banking, and potential rain makes fashion footwear the wrong choice. This is not a city-centre venue.

Race day by session

Friday (Practice 1 + 2)

~16-24°C

Mid-layer over base, rain jacket in bag. Best day to walk the circuit and find your spots — dress for movement, not just sitting.

Saturday (FP3 + Qualifying)

~17-26°C

Full layer system ready. Qualifying day sees peak crowds. Sun can be strong in the afternoon — sunscreen applied before arrival, not when you start to feel warm.

Sunday (Race day)

~18-28°C

Longest day on site. All three layers in your bag from the morning. Race day weather in Austria is unpredictable — the forecast you checked Wednesday won't tell you what Sunday afternoon looks like.

Sun protection: apply before you leave

The UV index at Red Bull Ring's altitude is higher than at sea-level circuits. You can burn on overcast days. Apply SPF 30+ before leaving accommodation — not when you start to feel warm. Re-apply at lunchtime.

Sunglasses and a lightweight cap or brimmed hat are worth bringing regardless of the forecast. The cap keeps light drizzle off your face and the direct sun off your neck between sessions.

What to avoid

  • Leaving the rain jacket in the hotel Mountain thunderstorms at Red Bull Ring don't wait for you to change clothes. It needs to be in your A3 bag at all times.
  • Cotton-only base layer Stays wet when damp and stays cold when wet. A synthetic or merino base layer handles both warm and post-storm conditions better.
  • Fashion shoes or sandals The GA banking and circuit terrain are outdoor grass and path surfaces. Unsuitable in any wet conditions.
  • White or pale clothing for GA Grass banking, sunscreen, and outdoor conditions will mark pale clothing by midday.
  • A heavy winter coat instead of layers Too warm at 26°C, impractical in your bag. A waterproof jacket over a mid-layer handles everything the Austrian GP can produce.
