What to Pack for the Las Vegas F1 Grand PrixNight race in November — the warmth question is more serious than you think.

The bag constraint

The Las Vegas GP uses a strict clear bag policy. Any bag larger than 6" × 9" must be transparent and no larger than 12" × 6" × 12" (approximately 30 × 15 × 30 cm). A standard backpack — even a small black one — fails security. Everything on this list needs to fit inside a compliant clear bag or a small clutch/fanny pack.

Warmth: the non-negotiable

The race starts at 10:00 PM in November. By the time the cars are racing, desert temperatures are typically 5–10°C. Wind chill in open grandstands makes it feel colder. You will be sitting still for two-plus hours at midnight in those conditions. Europeans who pack for a warm desert trip spend $150 on hoodies by lap 10.

Thermal base layer (top)

Critical — the temperature swing from afternoon to midnight is 15°C+

Warm mid-layer — fleece or insulated jacket

The real warmth layer for race night

Wind-blocking outer jacket

Desert wind on the Strip is significant after midnight

Beanie or warm hat

Heat loss from the head compounds the cold significantly

Gloves (packable)

Optional for most; essential if you run cold

Essentials for the circuit

Ear protection (foam earplugs or ear defenders)F1 cars are extremely loud at close range; some grandstand areas amplify this
Portable phone charger / power bankLate finish means long battery drain; no charging points at most grandstands
Sunscreen (SPF 30+)Daytime sessions run in full sun; afternoons can hit 20°C before the race
Water bottleHydration matters in desert conditions even at night; no outside drinks permitted — fill inside
Cash and cardCard is fine at most outlets but parking and street vendors sometimes cash-only
Tickets downloaded offlineConnectivity inside a dense crowd degrades; screenshots work when the app doesn't

Leave at the hotel

Any non-clear bag over 6" × 9" — will be turned away at security, no exceptions, no storage
Flag poles — most commonly confiscated item; bring the flag, leave the pole
Glass of any kind — prohibited; use plastic
Professional camera with detachable lens — not permitted; phones and compact cameras are fine
Umbrellas — not permitted inside
Outside food and drink — not permitted; food and drinks are available inside
