Day-by-day tips

Friday

Two free practice sessions — use it to learn the circuit

  • FP1 at 12:30 and FP2 at 16:00 with a 3.5-hour gap. This is the low-pressure day to orient yourself.
  • Walk the full perimeter during the gap. Albert Park's layout is less intuitive on foot than it looks on TV — knowing the walkways and gate access on Friday saves time on race day.
  • Find the free water stations and food vendors now. Lines are shorter on Friday.

Saturday

Practice 3 then qualifying — the competitive day

  • Qualifying at 16:00 is when the serious action starts. FP3 at 12:30 is useful but low stakes.
  • Saturday crowds are noticeably larger than Friday. Arrive at least 30 minutes before gates open if you want tram seats.
  • The qualifying hour is one of the best sessions of the weekend — cars at the absolute limit, low traffic, no strategy. Don't underestimate it.

Sunday (Race Day)

Race at 15:00 — plan your exit in advance

  • Arrive 90 minutes before the race. Gates open by 10:00–11:00. The extra time lets you settle without rushing.
  • Plan your post-race exit now, not at the chequered flag. Walking back to the CBD (35–40 min) beats waiting for a tram.
  • Stay for the podium. It runs 15–20 minutes after the race. By the time you leave, the initial crowd surge has cleared.
