Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Packing GuideWarm days, cooler evenings — and don't forget the power bank.

Early December in Abu Dhabi. 25°C during the day, cooler after sunset, moderate humidity. The most comfortable packing list on the calendar — but don't forget your power bank.

Weather reality for December Abu Dhabi

25–28°C during the day with moderate humidity around 50–60% — warm and comfortable, not hot and sticky. The sun is still intense in early December despite the season; SPF 30+ is non-optional during daytime sessions.

The temperature drops to 18–20°C after sunset, which happens around 5:30pm — right as the race is approaching its midpoint. If you're staying for the after-race concert, the jacket you carried all day becomes necessary by the time it starts.

Daytime: 25–28°C — warm sun, SPF 30+ required

After sunset (~5:30pm): 18–20°C — noticeably cooler, light jacket needed

Rain: Extremely unlikely — Abu Dhabi December is reliably dry

The bag limit

Yas Marina's size limit is approximately 30×30cm — roughly equivalent to a 20L daypack. Large hiking packs and anything resembling luggage are not allowed in. No clear bag requirement, but security will measure bags that look borderline.

Essentials — non-negotiable for this circuit

  • Sunscreen SPF 30+December in Abu Dhabi still delivers intense UV. Apply before entering and carry for reapplication during afternoon sessions.
  • Wide-brimmed hat or capSun is direct until the race starts at 5pm. Most grandstands have some shade but GA areas are exposed.
  • SunglassesStrong sun during all daytime sessions. Essential until after sunset.
  • Power bankThis is the most commonly forgotten item at Abu Dhabi. Cell service drops when 100,000 people are in the same location — running videos and the F1 app all day kills batteries by sunset. Bring a charged power bank.
  • Ear protectionFoam earplugs or ear defenders. Modern F1 cars are quieter than the V8 era but sustained exposure over a full race day is still significant.

Clothing for the daytime

Light breathable shirt

Essential

Synthetic moisture-wicking or linen. Light colours reflect heat. December is warm but comfortable — you don't need specialist heat gear, just don't wear heavy cotton.

Comfortable shorts or light trousers

Essential

A full race day involves walking between areas and standing for sessions. Anything restrictive becomes uncomfortable after a few hours.

Comfortable walking shoes

Essential

Yas Island is paved and relatively flat — this is not a Spa or Monaco terrain challenge. But a full day on your feet is still a full day. Worn-in comfortable shoes only.

Evening layer — the one thing most people forget

The temperature drops notably from 25°C in the afternoon to 18–20°C by race end and the after-race concert. People who pack only for the warm daytime are shivering through the headline act. One light jacket or hoodie fixes this completely and weighs almost nothing.

Light jacket or hoodie

Essential (concerts)

Must fit in a 30×30cm compliant bag during the day. A packable synthetic jacket or medium-weight hoodie is the right call. Not a heavy winter coat — that's too much.

Phone and power

Cell service at large events in Abu Dhabi degrades significantly when 100,000 people are in one location. Download tickets to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet before you arrive. Screenshot any key information. The Abu Dhabi GP app functions on cached data, but cellular-dependent features will be slow.

A full race day from afternoon to late concert means 8–10 hours of screen time. A power bank is not optional at Abu Dhabi — this is the one item that most consistently makes the difference between a frustrating and a smooth experience.

Leave these at home

  • Outside alcohol — sealed cans included, strictly prohibited
  • Large hiking packs or luggage-sized bags — over the 30×30cm limit
  • Professional DSLR cameras with lenses over 30cm — flagged at security
  • Drones or remote-controlled equipment
  • Outside food and drink (baby food and medical items excepted)
