Four drivers couldn't start the race. Both McLarens were among them — not from the same problem, but two completely separate electrical failures on the same morning. Lando Norris never made the grid. Oscar Piastri's car was wheeled back before the formation lap. Two races in. Zero points for the reigning champion.
What Happened on Track
Winner: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) — maiden F1 victory. Podium: Antonelli — Russell — Hamilton.
Antonelli became the second youngest race winner in F1 history at 19 years and 202 days. Only Verstappen has done it younger.
Hamilton took the lead at the start but Antonelli blasted past on the back straight before end of lap two and never looked back — 5.5 seconds clear of Russell at the flag. Hamilton's podium was his first for Ferrari.
Final top 6: Antonelli · Russell · Hamilton · Leclerc · Bearman · Gasly
The Storylines That Made It
Both McLarens didn't start. Two separate power unit electrical failures, completely unrelated, on the same day. Their points deficit to Mercedes went from manageable to concerning in one afternoon.
Hamilton vs Leclerc as teammates. They fought wheel-to-wheel through multiple corners, swapping positions, running side by side through chicanes. Leclerc said over the radio it was 'actually quite fun.' Ferrari finished 3rd and 4th fighting each other.
Verstappen retires. Running sixth with 10 laps to go, electrical failure. Red Bull's car is simply not working yet under the new regulations.
Both Aston Martins retired again. Lance Stroll was heard on radio saying 'pray, pray with me' about Japan. The Honda power unit situation is a catastrophe.
Ocon penalised for hitting Colapinto. Alpine still scored a double points finish — 6th and 10th — which they'll take as a win given the chaos.
What It Was Like to Be There
Shanghai drew 230,000 fans over the weekend — the highest attendance in nearly two decades. About 14% were international visitors.
The metro gets heavily congested leaving on Sunday. Arrive early and consider waiting 30-45 minutes inside after the race before heading for Line 11.
Food and drink inside is a consistent complaint — not enough vendors for the crowd size. Eat before you arrive or budget time for queues.
The Bund and Nanjing Road are worth a morning or evening. Shanghai rewards the fans who treat it as a city trip with a race attached, not just a race.
Championship After Round 2
Russell 43pts · Antonelli 43pts · Hamilton 27pts · Leclerc 24pts · Norris 10pts.
Russell leads on countback. Mercedes are dominant. McLaren are in serious trouble.

Season 8 ends with Norris lifting the trophy. Two races into 2026, he has zero points and both McLarens failed to start in China.
Antonelli — the 19-year-old called up to replace Hamilton — just won his first Formula 1 race. Hamilton is on the podium for Ferrari. The sport looks completely different to how Season 8 left it.
That is F1. The storylines never stop. If you want to attend a race while these battles are live, Miami is 7 weeks away and Montreal is 10.
