Why Albert Park is different

Albert Park is a race inside a city. The circuit is a ring of public roads around a lake in a park, 3.5 km from the CBD, and the whole weekend runs on trams and footpaths rather than shuttles and car parks. If you are staying in the city, you can walk to the gates.

It is also one of the easiest F1 weekends for a first-timer: English-speaking, well signed and served by one of the best public transport networks on the calendar. The things that catch people out are small and avoidable — no Myki card on race morning, trying to drive, leaving at the flag.

In 2027 it is a sprint weekend, which changes what a ticket is worth. Saturday carries the sprint and then qualifying, so a Saturday seat sees two competitive sessions instead of one practice and qualifying.

The race has moved: Melbourne opened the 2026 season in early March and is round 3 in 2027, in early April. Advice written for a March race — especially on heat and UV — is being rechecked for April.

Circuit at a Glance

Trams and the St Kilda Road walk

Routes 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 and 72 all run along St Kilda Road past the circuit. The walk from Flinders Street is 3.5 km, flat, and takes most people 35–40 minutes — on race day tens of thousands of fans make it with you.

Undercover seats are limited

The AGPC sells undercover seats in six stands only — Fangio, Piastri, Prost, Ricciardo, Schumacher and Senna — and only in the premium double-letter rows (AA, BB, CC). Even those are not full weather protection.

Where the overtaking is

Turn 3, which the AGPC calls one of the circuit's most reliable braking and overtaking zones, and Turn 11 at the end of Albert Park's longest straight, a hotspot for late braking.

Four seasons in a day

Melbourne weather turns fast. Pack sunscreen and a compact poncho whichever stand you are in, and a layer for the evening walk back.

Circuit Experience

Load a Myki card before race day: Trams need one — top up at 7-Eleven, train stations or online. Credit-card tap works on most services, but a loaded Myki is more reliable when the stops are packed.

Check your route the night before: The PTV Journey Planner gives exact stops and times. Screenshot it — phone signal can be patchy around the circuit on race day.

Rideshare drop-off: Drivers cannot stop at the main gates. Ask to be dropped on Queens Road or Canterbury Road and walk the last 10 minutes.

After the race: Stay for the podium (15–20 minutes) while the worst of the crowd clears, then walk back up St Kilda Road — faster than waiting for a tram in the first 20 minutes. For a rideshare, walk at least 1.5 km north before opening the app; at the gate you will wait 45–90 minutes and pay 3–4× the normal fare.

Who enjoys Albert Park most?

Anyone who stays in or near the city and treats the trams and the St Kilda Road walk as part of the day. Get a Myki card, leave the car, stay for the podium — and Melbourne is one of the most relaxed race weekends there is.

Ticket Strategy

Saturday is the big day at a sprint weekend: it carries the sprint and qualifying, so a Saturday ticket covers considerably more racing than at a standard weekend.

Undercover means certain rows: Only the premium AA/BB/CC rows in six stands are undercover. Check the row, not just the stand.

2027 prices are not published yet: The AGPC had not released 2027 grandstand pricing when this page was last updated. Check the official ticket search for current figures rather than budgeting off last year's.

Plan the walk: Jones is a short walk from Gate 1, and Button and Clark sit off Gate 5. Saturday at a sprint weekend draws bigger crowds, so allow more time in and out.

Race Weekend Notes

A park, not a purpose-built circuit

58 laps of a 5.278 km lap on public roads around Albert Park Lake. The back section along the lake, Lakeside Drive, is lined with concrete barriers because there is no run-off near the shore.

Turn 11 at the end of the longest straight

The late-braking hotspot, with Webber on the inside and Vettel opposite.

No longer the opener

Round 3 in 2027: the paddock arrives with 2 races of form already on the board.

Lap record

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Australian Grand Prix 2027?

Apr 2-4 2027 at Albert Park, Melbourne — round 3 of the 2027 season and a sprint weekend.

What time is the Australian Grand Prix 2027?

The FIA had not published session times for the 2027 Australian Grand Prix when this page was last updated. The weekend is confirmed for Apr 2-4 2027 at Albert Park. Our estimate for the race start is 3:00 PM AEST on the Sunday — the 2026 race started at 3:00 PM AEDT — but treat that as a pattern, not a time to book flights around.

Is the 2027 Australian GP a sprint weekend?

Yes. The 2027 Australian Grand Prix is one of the season's sprint weekends. That means one practice session instead of three, sprint qualifying on Friday, and two competitive sessions on Saturday — the sprint and then qualifying for Sunday's race. A Saturday ticket is worth considerably more at a sprint weekend than at a standard one.

Is the Australian Grand Prix still the season opener in 2027?

No. Melbourne opened the 2026 season but is round 3 in 2027 — Bahrain opens the season instead, with Saudi Arabia second. The practical difference for a spectator is that the paddock arrives with 2 races' worth of form already on the board.

How many sessions do I get on a sprint weekend?

Five, of which four are competitive: one free practice, sprint qualifying, the sprint, qualifying, and the Grand Prix. A standard weekend has three practice sessions and only two competitive ones. If you are buying a single-day ticket, Saturday carries the sprint and qualifying.

When will the 2027 Australian GP session times be published?

The FIA publishes session times well after the calendar itself, usually a few months before the season starts. The Australian Grand Prix Corporation posts the confirmed timetable at grandprix.com.au, and it is the version to plan around.

How do I get to Albert Park for the Australian GP?

Take a tram on St Kilda Road — routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 16, 64, 67 or 72 all stop near the circuit. Myki card required. Alternatively, walk from the CBD in about 35–40 minutes via St Kilda Road. There is no car parking at the circuit.

Is there parking at the Australian Grand Prix?

No. Albert Park Circuit does not have car parking for spectators. The Australian Grand Prix Corporation strongly recommends public transport. Do not attempt to drive to the circuit.

What is the best way to leave the Australian Grand Prix after the race?

Walk back along St Kilda Road — it is faster than waiting for a tram immediately after the race. Stay for the podium ceremony (15–20 minutes), then leave. If you need a rideshare, walk at least 1.5 km north before booking to avoid the surge.

Which Albert Park grandstands are undercover?

The AGPC sells undercover seats in six stands only: Fangio, Piastri, Prost, Ricciardo, Schumacher and Senna. Undercover seats are the premium double-letter rows (AA, BB, CC) rather than the whole stand, and the AGPC states that undercover seating does not give full weather protection.

Which Albert Park grandstand is best for overtaking?

Hill, on the apex of Turn 3 — one of the circuit's most reliable braking and overtaking zones — and Webber and Vettel either side of Turn 11 at the end of the longest straight.

What bag can I bring to the Australian Grand Prix?

The AGPC sets no bag size limit and there is no clear-bag rule, but every bag can be searched. Outside alcohol, glass, camera lenses longer than 300 mm, hard-cased eskies (soft cooler bags are allowed), drones and laser pointers are not allowed.

How many laps is the Australian Grand Prix?

58 laps of the 5.278 km Albert Park Circuit — 306.124 km in total.
