Start with the shoes
Shoes are the one clothing choice that can end your day early. A race day runs 10,000 to 20,000 steps across concrete, gravel and grass banks, and most of the walk is before the first session and after the last one, when you are queueing for shuttles and trains.
The base outfit that works at most circuits
Three layers cover most of the calendar. You can always take one off; you cannot put on a layer you left at the hotel.
Base: a T-shirt or team shirt in a fabric that dries fast. Cotton is fine on a dry, mild day and miserable on a hot or wet one.
Mid-layer: a light fleece or zip hoodie for the evening. Grandstands are exposed, and the temperature falls fast once the sun drops behind them.
Shell: a packable rain jacket. It is more use than an umbrella, which you cannot open in a grandstand without blocking the row behind.
Bottoms: shorts or quick-dry trousers. Jeans are the item most people regret at a hot or wet race.
Head: a cap or brimmed hat and sunglasses, even at races you think of as cool. Melbourne and Mexico City both have high UV.
What to wear by race climate
Each race below links to its own What to Wear guide with session temperatures, shade by grandstand and the circuit's specific rules.
Hot and humid
Sweat does not evaporate, so cotton stays wet all day. Moisture-wicking everything, no denim, and shoes that cope with standing water after a downpour.
- Singapore Grand Prix · Oct 9-11Night race, still humid after dark. Your normal race-day outfit will not work here.
- Miami Grand Prix · May 1-3May heat on concrete. Lightweight outfits and shoes built for 15,000 steps.
- São Paulo Grand Prix · Nov 6-8Hot and humid with sudden heavy rain. Keep a poncho in your bag.
Hot sun, little shade
The risk is sunburn and heat, not rain. A brimmed hat, sunscreen reapplied through the day and light colours matter more than anything else you wear.
- Hungarian Grand Prix · Jul 24-2630–35°C in late July, no shade and uneven ground.
- Spanish Grand Prix · Sep 11-1325–28°C in September with almost no rain and intense sun.
- Italian Grand Prix · Sep 4-6September heat, limited shade and an afternoon thunderstorm risk.
- United States Grand Prix · Oct 23-25Late-October Texas heat by day, then a 15°C drop before the evening concerts.
Changeable — sun, wind and rain in one day
Dress in three layers you can take off and put back on: a T-shirt, a fleece or hoodie, and a packable rain shell. Avoid jeans; they get heavy when wet.
- British Grand Prix · Jul 3-5English July can go from hot to wet in an afternoon.
- Belgian Grand Prix · Jul 17-1923°C sunshine to cold rain in an hour, on hilly ground.
- Austrian Grand Prix · Jun 26-28Mountain weather — hot sun to thunderstorm on the same afternoon.
- Canadian Grand Prix · May 22-24May weather that swings 15°C in a day on the island.
- Japanese Grand Prix · Mar 27-29Cool, possibly cold, possibly wet. Three layers and a rain jacket.
- Australian Grand Prix · Mar 6-8Mild autumn temperatures with extreme UV, and a layer needed by afternoon.
- Azerbaijan Grand Prix · Sep 24-2622–25°C, but the Caspian crosswind makes it feel cooler. Bring a wind layer.
Warm days, cold nights
The mistake is dressing for the afternoon and sitting in a grandstand after sunset. Bring the warm layer even if you leave the hotel in a T-shirt.
- Las Vegas Grand Prix · Nov 19-21Race night runs 5–10°C, coldest at the finish. A proper jacket, not a hoodie.
- Mexico City Grand Prix · Oct 30 - Nov 1Warm days, cold evenings and strong UV at altitude. Closed shoes are required.
- Qatar Grand Prix · Nov 27-2928°C afternoons and 18°C qualifying nights. Cover shoulders and knees on the metro.
- Abu Dhabi Grand Prix · Dec 4-6Warm December days and cooler evenings under the floodlights.
- Monaco Grand Prix · Jun 5-7June heat by day, cooler evenings, and steep streets that make shoes the main decision.
Team merch and F1 outfits for photos
Team shirts and caps are what most of the crowd wears, and there is no wrong team to turn up in. The practical catch is fabric: replica team shirts are mostly polyester, which is fine in the heat and cold the moment the sun goes. Wear one over a base layer at an evening session, or carry the jacket.
If you are building an outfit for photos, build it around the shoes and the bag limit, not the other way round. Several circuits cap bag size, and Miami runs a clear-bag policy, so the small bag you planned may not get in. Check your race's bag policy page before you buy accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear to an F1 race?
Broken-in walking shoes, a T-shirt, a mid-layer such as a fleece or hoodie, and a packable rain jacket, plus a cap and sunglasses. That covers most circuits. Adjust for the race: drop the fleece in Singapore or Hungary, and upgrade it to a proper jacket for the Las Vegas night race.
What shoes should I wear to a Grand Prix?
Trainers or lightweight hiking shoes that you have already worn for a full day. Expect 10,000 to 20,000 steps across concrete, gravel and grass. New shoes, heels, wedges and flip-flops are the most common mistake, and the Mexico City circuit turns away open-toed shoes.
Is there a dress code at F1 races?
Not for general admission or grandstand tickets. Monaco grandstands have no enforced dress code either. Two exceptions to plan for: in Qatar, covered shoulders and knees are expected on the Doha Metro and in public areas, and paddock or hospitality tickets often set their own smart-casual code, so check the ticket terms.
What do people wear to the Las Vegas Grand Prix?
Warm clothes. The race runs late on Saturday night in November, and race night runs 5–10°C, coldest at the finish. A proper insulated jacket, long trousers, closed shoes and a hat or gloves for the grandstand. Fans who dress for a Strip night out are the ones who leave early.
What should women wear to an F1 race?
The same practical rules apply: closed, broken-in shoes, layers and a hat. Shorts or loose trousers are easier than skirts and dresses on steep grandstand steps and at windy circuits such as Zandvoort and Silverstone. Pick a small crossbody bag sized to the circuit's bag limit, and check the clear-bag rules at Miami and other US races before you buy one.
Should I wear team merch to an F1 race?
Yes if it is comfortable for a full day outdoors. Team shirts are mostly polyester, which works in heat but is cold once the sun drops, so wear it over a base layer or carry a jacket. If you want it for Friday, buy it before you travel rather than queueing at the circuit stands.
