Track action at COTA runs through the middle of the day, and the shuttle and traffic situation means you want to be moving towards the circuit well before the first session you care about. That leaves early mornings genuinely usable — but only for things downtown, close to where you are staying. Anything that involves driving away from the city is a Thursday activity, not a Friday one.

Austin Morning History Walking Tour
1 hour 30 minutesEarly risers, first-timers
Ninety minutes through central Austin with a local guide — the Capitol, the Congress Avenue corridor and how a state capital became a music city. Short enough to do before heading out to the circuit.
Two and a half hours by e-bike past the murals, Barton Springs and the Capitol. Covers far more ground than the walking tour and the electric assist matters — Austin is hillier than people expect.
Two hours in an air-conditioned Mercedes van taking in the Capitol, the food truck scene and the residential neighbourhoods you would not otherwise see. The right call if the forecast is hot or someone in the group will not walk far.
Free, open early, and the best view back at the downtown skyline. Adjacent to Barton Springs if you want to combine the two.
Texas State Capitol
45 min
Free self-guided entry, and taller than the US Capitol in Washington — a fact every guide in the city will tell you. Air-conditioned, central, and takes under an hour.
Food
Barbecue & Food Tours
Central Texas barbecue is a genuine reason to arrive a day early. The thing nobody warns first-timers about is the queueing: the famous places sell out and close, they do not serve until late, and a two-hour wait on a Saturday is normal rather than exceptional. The guided options below exist mostly to remove that problem — a tour with food included is not paying a premium for convenience so much as buying back an afternoon.
Food
Austin BBQ & City Walking Tour
3 hrsFirst-time barbecue
Small group capped at twelve, stopping at Cooper's for sausage and mac and Terry Black's for brisket, with all food included. Solves the queue problem and covers the downtown walk at the same time.
Three hours and six tastings across central Austin, run by Secret Food Tours. Broader than the barbecue tour — tacos and local specialities alongside the smoked meat.
A street of converted bungalows turned bars, with food trucks parked in the gardens. Less frantic than Sixth Street and the easier option if you want to hear each other talk.
Evenings
Evenings and After the Race
This is Austin's real advantage over most races on the calendar. Sessions finish in the afternoon, the city calls itself the Live Music Capital of the World without much argument, and the venues run seven nights a week. Sunday is the exception — the race starts early afternoon and getting out of COTA afterwards takes a long time, so do not book anything you cannot be late for.
Nightlife
Austin Live Music Crawl
3 hoursMusic fans
Three hours across multiple venues with cover charges included and a guide who knows which room has the band worth staying for. Frequently sells out during race week, so book before you fly.
Two hours paddling on Lady Bird Lake, timed for the Congress Avenue bridge bat emergence — the largest urban bat colony in North America. An Originals by GetYourGuide tour, and the most distinctly Austin thing on this page.
Two and a half hours in a private open-top Bronco: Mount Bonnell, South Congress, Lady Bird Lake, the East Austin murals and Rainey Street, with hotel pickup. Works well as a late-afternoon run into the evening.
A spring-fed pool that holds about 20°C year-round, in the middle of the city. October afternoons in Texas can still hit 30°C, and this is the local answer to that.
Day Trips
Full-Day Trips — Thursday Only
Both of these run seven to eight hours door to door, which does not fit around a day with track action in it. Thursday, before running starts, is the only sensible slot. Trying either on Friday means missing practice; trying either on Sunday is not possible at all.
Day Trip
San Antonio Driving Tour with River Walk Cruise
7 hoursThursday
Seven hours in a small group capped at seven, with pick-up: the Alamo, Mission San José, a River Walk cruise and the obligatory Buc-ee's stop. San Antonio is 130km each way, which is where most of the time goes.
Eight hours to LBJ Ranch, Fredericksburg and Luckenbach with hotel pick-up included. The German-settled towns west of Austin are a genuinely different side of Texas from the city.
A collapsed grotto with a waterfall, about 45 minutes west. Entry is by advance reservation only and slots go quickly — this is not a spontaneous trip.
